Pansies are Here!

Pansies have finally arrived in the Hyams Bedding area.  This versatile plant is wonderful in the flowerbed as well as even in a salad.  For landscaping use, pansies are useful for creating a mass colorful effect, edging in flowerbeds or even simply planting them in containers and/or window boxes.

Pansies come in a multitude of colors including: purple, orange, red, blue, yellow, white, peach, and lavender.  There are three basic color patterns: face (which will have a dark center), single (which have a single color with black lines radiating from the center and also know as “whiskers”) and clear (which are single color).  Some of these plants also have a delicate fragrance that can best be noticed early in the morning and around dusk.

Along with adding colorful beauty to your landscape, the pansy blooms are edible and high in vitamin A and C.  The blooms have been used as a garnish in salads and soups as well as used to make flavored honey and syrups.

Pansies enjoy morning sun and should be watered when their soil dries out.  You can also use mulch around the pansies to help the soil retain water and thwart weed growth.
