Plants for Valentine’s Day

Searching for a unique gift for that special someone can oftentimes be a very daunting task. A bouquet of roses, carnations or lilies are all well and good, but if you want to get a little creative this Valentine’s Day, venture into Hyams where you can find a variety of beautiful Valentine’s Day potted flower arrangements as well as a very unique plant that’s perfect for a gardener.

The String of Hearts vine is very appropriately named given that its leaves are heart-shaped. It has long trailing stems with succulent leaves and coloring that is a bluish-green on top and a gray-green/purple on the bottom side. This plant grows well indoors in brightly lit areas or outdoors out of direct sunlight.

Instead of going the obvious route this Valentine’s Day, try giving your loved one something that will last long after a rose’s last petal has wilted; especially if that loved one has a gardener’s heart!

If you’re in search for an extremely easy care plant, then try this. The ZZ plant drinks very little water and can go long periods of time (often as long as 2-4 weeks) without being watered. The ZZ plant isn’t particular about its lighting needs either. It enjoys medium to low light, but keep it out of direct sun as its leaves can easily get burnt. The Cymbidium Orchid

If you permit it, winter can be a dull time of the year with the lack of those spring flowers and their luscious color. However, there is one foolproof way to ensure your home with rich color throughout these next few winter months – orchids.

The striking color of orchids can flourish your home all year long with radiant color even on the gloomiest days of the year. Cymbidium orchids have been making a strong comeback in the orchid world as many people are recapturing the brilliance of the large bloom spray a Cymbidium offers, even in the dead of winter. This type of orchid is much more cold tolerant vs. others in its family. During the growing season of summer, the Cymbidium will send out pseudobulbs along with long thin leaves, but its natural blooming season is winter! Feeding Our Feathered Friends

When you think about feeding birds or purchasing birdfeeders, typically those warm summer months come to mind. Don’t forget that providing birds with food through the winter months can be vital to their survival.

Living in the south, we typically don’t have to endure single digit temperatures or several inches of snowfall and thus don’t feel as hard-pressed about the cold. For our musical friends, however, foraging for food in the winter can be a taxing event since most of their food source has either already been consumed, died or not ready for consumption until spring. Providing birds with a good food source, such as oil sunflower seeds that have a high fat and protein content, can help keep them healthy and happy throughout winter as well as providing your backyard with birdsong to brighten those chilling days.

If you’re one that doesn’t like venturing out into the cold to change or refill bird food, try purchasing a birdfeeder that has a high seed capacity and a larger cover without a platform. In a platform feeder, the seed may need to be changed more often due to increased moisture and mildew buildup creating spoilage. Protecting the seed from moisture will decrease the number of times it will need to be changed as well as providing a shelter for the birds when they are feeding.
